Nearly all personal letters, diaries, and family records from my parents, grandparents, and relatives are handwritten in Sütterlin. Adjacent is a page from a "Poesie Album" -- a small book of good wishes and words of wisdom contributed by relatives and friends to guide a young German girl into her future.

"Be humble and true; face danger with courage. Don't be afraid!

Written to you on Whitsuntide 1925 by your brother Harry."

The sentiment was written to my aunt Hertha shortly before her 14th birthday by her brother, Harry, who was 10 years old at the time.

Although Uncle Harry learned and had to use Sütterlin in school, you can see from the casual way he signed his name that this stylized form of handwriting came hard -- and was ultimately and joyfully abandoned in the signature.
